New Engagement Ring Trends (2021)

If you see a proposal on the horizon, then it’s time to start shopping around for your dream engagement ring.

There are several types of engagement rings. Whether you prefer the traditional look of a classic solitaire diamond engagement ring, or the contemporary elegance of a colourful gemstone band, the new engagement ring trends for 2021 hold something for everyone.

Read on, as we cover the different types of ring styles that you’ll be seeing throughout the year ahead!

The Solitaire New Engagement Ring Trend in 2021

It’s no surprise that the traditional solitaire engagement ring is once again a favourite for 2021. A classic that never goes out of style, this timeless trend is seen year after year.

While in recent years we’ve seen some more theatrical interpretations of the solitaire style - for example, dramatic cuts and colours - 2021 is taking a more traditional approach. Expect to see the solitaire engagement ring in classic cuts like round and and princess, as the focus rests on that sparkling central diamond.

A new engagement ring trend that is perfectly suited to the classic bride, you simply can’t go wrong with the solitaire style. If you’re craving a bit more sparkle, this engagement ring can be paired with a diamond wedding band for added shimmer!

Halo Engagement Rings

For many brides-to-be, the question on their minds is Are halo rings going out of style?

The halo engagement ring was a popular choice throughout 2020, as many gravitated towards that signature sparkle. Halo rings feature a setting of pavé diamonds that surround the centre stone, reflecting the light from all angles to create a brilliant sparkle. This also gives the illusion that the centre stone is bigger than it actually is.

The good news is that this engagement ring trend is set to return for 2021, along with some dazzling new interpretations. In order to enhance that illusion effect, many designers are experimenting with unusual shapes, settings and colours - for example, a double or even triple halo.

Hidden Detail Engagement Rings

While the halo ring is perfect for women searching for some added sparkle, 2021 also has a trend for those who prefer something more subtle.

Hidden detail engagement rings is a modern engagement ring style that is rapidly rising to popularity, as a romantic and meaningful spin on a classic style. In many cases, a simple solitaire ring is given some discreet and unique detail which is “hidden” along the side of the band. This could be an engraving, filigree element or even a touch of diamond detailing.

These hidden details lend creativity and personality to an otherwise traditional engagement ring, ideal for the woman searching for a style that is unique yet understated.

Split Shank Engagement Rings

Another one for the ladies who enjoy something just a little different, split shank engagement rings are set to be a huge trend for 2021.

This distinctive style features a band that splits apart as it reaches the centre stone, designed to catch the eye and lend a contemporary feel to your ring. According to some, this style also makes the centre stone appear larger and more prominent.

The split shank style can come in many forms, from minimalist and modern to something more ornate: in some cases, the shank is split into more than two bands, or bands which weave together in an elegant and intricate manner.

Of course, the most memorable example has to be Beyoncé’s engagement ring, featuring a split shank band and breathtaking 18 carat centre diamond!

Coloured Gemstone Engagement Rings

In a blog post earlier this year, we covered the rising popularity of coloured gemstone engagement rings, along with some of the most popular stones for a diamond-alternative ring. It looks like this trend is set to continue into 2021, as more and more couples are opting for engagement rings with colourful gemstones.

Although diamond remains the favourite due to its romantic symbolism and unparalleled durability, other gemstones carry their own meaning that add personality and flair to the engagement ring. Many people also enjoy the vibrant hues of a coloured gemstone engagement ring, especially when combined with warm yellow or rose gold.

Yellow Gold Engagement Rings

In recent years, platinum and white gold have been the metal of choice for engagement rings, favoured for their luxurious yet modern feel. Yellow gold never really went out of style, but in 2021 it’s set to turn more heads than usual.

Frequently used in vintage inspired rings, this metal has also become a popular choice in more unique and contemporary styles. The rich warmth of yellow gold wonderfully complements coloured gemstones, meaning it ties in perfectly with another of 2021’s biggest engagement ring trends!

Vintage Engagement Rings

People fall in love with the old-fashioned romance and character of vintage jewellery, and engagement rings are no exception. Make sure to check out our guide to vintage inspired engagement rings where we explore this new engagement ring trend in much more depth!

Vintage engagement rings can come in a variety of styles, but the most coveted often feature intricate details such as milgrain (a delicate beaded metal pattern) and filigree (fine lace-effect elements where the metal has been curled or twisted).

Perfect for matching with a beautiful upcycled wedding dress, this 2021 engagement ring trend is a dream come true for the vintage-loving bride.

Bespoke Engagement Rings

With Vogue predicting a surge in 'unique and original designs', bespoke engagement rings are going to be on the rise in popularity this year. What could be better than creating your dream engagement ring from scratch? From the centre stone right down to the finer details, a bespoke ring allows you to decide every aspect of your engagement band.

While this has always been a popular choice, bespoke engagement rings are set to dominate in 2021 as personalised jewellery continues to trend. The idea of creating and wearing a one-of-a-kind engagement ring is undeniably romantic, especially if you design it together with your partner.
