A UK hallmark is struck by an independent assay office and guarantees the precious metal content of the item you are buying. Sellers in contravention of the law may be prosecuted and could face fines or imprisonment.
The hallmark is a mark which shows that the item has been independently tested and verified as matching its description, and conforming to all legal standards of purity or fineness of the metal. This table shows the compulsory marks precious metals should carry; the sponsor's mark, the fineness mark and the assay office mark. The table also shows optional hallmarks of the traditional fineness symbols, the date letter and international convention marks. It also explains the weights of precious metals that are exempt from hallmarking.

What should I do if my item is not hallmarked?

If you have a concern regarding hallmarking contact your local Trading Standards Authority.
