Pear Shaped Diamonds
Pear-shaped diamonds, also known as teardrop diamonds, combine the brilliance of the round cut with a unique, elongated shape that narrows to a point at one end. This elegant cut enhances the stone's sparkle and creates a flattering, slenderising effect on the wearer's finger, making it a popular choice for engagement rings and fine jewellery.
About Pear Shaped
Although the pear shaped diamond is often thought of as being modern in design, its origin dates back to mid-15th century by Flemish polisher Lodewyk (Louis) van Berquem of Bruges. Van Berquem also invented the scaif - a polishing wheel infused with a mixture of olive oil and diamond dust that ultimately revolutionised the diamond cutting industry
Van Berquem's scaif allowed all facets of a diamond to be polished with precision and through this new ability Van Berquem introduced the concept of absolute symmetry in the placement of facets on a stone. By 1475 he developed the first pear shaped Pendeloque or Briolette-cut, a revolutionary breakthrough on shape, design and cutting excellence.
With typically 58 facets, pear-shaped diamonds exhibit excellent brilliance and fire, reflecting and refracting light beautifully. Their elongated form has a flattering effect, making fingers appear longer and slimmer. Pear-shaped diamonds are highly versatile and can be set in a variety of styles, including solitaire, halo, and vintage-inspired designs, offering a blend of classic and contemporary appeal. This shape also has the advantage of appearing larger than many other cuts of the same carat weight due to its elongated surface area. The pear shape’s graceful and sophisticated look, coupled with its brilliant sparkle, makes it a popular choice for engagement rings.
