Princess Diamonds

Princess diamonds, known for their modern and chic appearance, are one of the most popular diamond cuts today. They are admired for their sharp, square shape and remarkable brilliance.

About Princess Diamonds

Princess diamonds are a popular and modern choice, renowned for their sharp, angular beauty and exceptional brilliance. Characterised by their square shape, princess cut diamonds feature pointed corners and typically have 58 facets, designed to maximise light reflection and refraction. This cut gained popularity for its contemporary, geometric aesthetic that combines the sparkle of a round brilliant with a distinctive, edgy look. Princess diamonds are highly versatile and can be set in a variety of jewellery styles, from classic solitaires to intricate vintage designs.

The name 'princess' was given to square cut diamonds in the 1960s. However, Israeli diamond cutter Ygal Perlman, along with Betzalel Ambar and Israel Itzkowitz developed the "square modified brilliant" cut - the shape that is now known as princess shape. Their aim was to offer a square-shaped diamond with the brilliance and fire of a round brilliant cut whilst maximising the rough diamond's yield, meaning less wastage of the original stone.

The cut’s unique faceting pattern creates a dazzling display of fire and scintillation, making it one of the most brilliant diamond shapes available. Additionally, princess cut diamonds often appear larger than their actual carat weight due to their larger diagonal measurement. Their blend of modern elegance, exceptional sparkle, and versatility makes princess diamonds a favoured choice for engagement rings and other fine jewellery.
